Welcome to the second issue of the Prevention Plus e-newsletter. I want to thank those of you who provided feedback and ideas for improvement. Hopefully you will see your comments reflected in this and upcoming editions. As always I invite all our readers to submit tips, ideas, stories, etc. that have helped them in their efforts.

Strategies for Success

In this edition I would like to introduce you to a new approach that I have begun using with my clients. I call it “REP. REP stands for 1) Rational 2) Emotional and 3) Physical. Simply stated, it insures that I am creating an environment that will result in the greatest level of success.

  • Rational: When introducing a new process or program, it is imperative that the people you want to influence and whose participation is essential have a good understanding of the rationale behind this change.
  • Emotional: Your audience will play a more active role in your effort if they have a good sense of the “what’s in it for me” factor. The more you tap into the emotional aspects of the participants by making sure they understand how they will benefit the greater the likelihood they will be involved and the greater the chances for success.
  • Physical: Ask yourself this question: “What do the participants need in their work environment in order to actively participate in this process?” This may be something as simple as a new tool or an ergonomic fix as well as ongoing communication and acknowledgment for their efforts.

When I utilize REP I ask myself three basic questions:

1) Do the participants understand the new process?
2) Do they understand what is in it for them? and
3) Do they have the tools and support they need to do be successful?

Asking (and answering!) these 3 questions as a part of your process will go a long way towards increasing participation, reducing resistance and maximizing your ROI.
